Life Skills
Every day social and practical skills are learned by the students who may participate in one of our various life skills programs. What students focus on is dependent on what group they are in. Some students may learn how to plan and cook a balanced meal, or how to make good decisions and avoid peer pressure. They may also learn about budgeting, job hunting and living on their own. As well, some students participate in in-school community based projects that teach the importance of being caring citizens and giving back to society. Students in the program also enjoy learning yoga and relaxation techniques and take part in a multitude of social outings, including lunches, bowling, mini-golf and the Special Olympics. Social activities put to use many learned life skills, and provide the students with the opportunity to practice their conversation and socialization skills. Another important part of the life skills program is the work study component: interested students are placed in a work placement, either in school or outside of school, where they further develop essential work-place skills. They also begin to explore career interests through the use of a computer program.
